This place is legit. It's a local dive bar. Is it an ugly, smelly, filthy, beer bar...full of skalliwags?? Yes. But that's why we come. The food is awesome. The owner's daughter Leanna has taken over the kitchen -- her cooking rocks. Fresh, home made chips and legit burgers.

Don't let the name fool you. There are no yachts in sight, and I doubt any of the patrons have ever even been on a yacht, let alone own one (myself included). This is your prototypical dive bar. In fact, I bet if you look up the definition of a dive bar, this place is referenced. Of course, I knew this going in, so I wasn't disappointed like other reviewers. But, if you're thinking dive bar means cheap, then you might be disappointed. I mean, it IS Hermosa Beach, so two schooners (huge, to be fair) of Pacifico beer and a glass of red wine (only one choice - a red blend) still cost us $31 (before tip).

Just walked in / cash only - which is a Red Flag / no toilet paper in men's room as after I walked out the "Manager" told me to to use "women's room" ... I then walked by the kitchen where there was a young woman ( 18?) sitting with a dog while she was on her laptop...literally 2 feet away from the food prep area..
I told them I was taking pics where they asked me to leave..
Unreal...this is in the U.S.?
Read the other reviews posted..
This is probably the most disgusting place I've been to in a long time--that includes traveling all over the world / it's totally unacceptable - sanitarily and not only that a crass attitude by the clueless manager..
Stay away as I am in touch with the California Restaurant Board -

HBYC is as good as I remembered; Great burgers and homemade potato chips from real potatoes. This place hasn't changed in 20 years!

I received a Money mailer coupon for the Hermosa Beach Yacht Club that had a special on Monday of 1/4 pound bacon blue cheese burger with fries for $5. I've had the burger before and it was not bad (not as good As Ercoles but still not bad). Decided to try it last Monday and what an awful experience. We arrived at 5 pm when the bar was supposed to be open. They kept us outside for 15 minutes while the till cash was counted. If the place was supposed to open at 5 pm, the till should have already been counted so that customers did not have to wait outside for 15 minutes.
We ordered 2 burgers medium. After waiting what seemed like a long time, the burgers finally came. My first inclination that this was not going to be a good experience was the size of the burger. No way was it 1/4 pound. I picked up the bun and saw that it looked more the size of the $1 hamburger at McDonald's. It was so overcooked that it was inedible. I wanted to leave but my boyfriend who rarely sends anything back convinced me to give them another try. By the time the second burgers came, it was after 6 o'clock and I was pretty hungry so I ate it. There was less than a teaspoon of blue cheese, about 1/2 a strip of bacon and it was still overcooked. My boyfriend told the bartender/waitress that his burger was inedible again and wanted it taken off of our bill. As I ate mine, we said that we would pay for 1 burger. A woman came out of the back and said that since some of the second burger was eaten, we would have to pay for both. She said that she was the owner and that we should not come back again.
I understand that this is a "dive bar" but that does not excuse the lack of customer service and the rudeness by the supposed "owner". I've never been at a bar or restaurant that when food is sent back even once that the customer is yelled at and told to not come back again. After the way that we were treated, did she actually think that we would consider ever coming back?
I checked YELP when I got home to see what the reviews were for HBYC. I am not the only person who had a similar experience. Given that there are numerous bars in Hermosa that cater to locals, HBYC would not be a place I would consider going back to.
On the way home, we stopped at Jack in the Box for a burger and fries for the same $5. It says something that a bar that brags about how good their burgers are can't even compete with a fast food restaurant.
